Two harbours, and a lot of day trips

Auckland is where the itinerary starts. Most of the good days are outside it.

How early the Hobbiton bus really leaves. What a Waiheke ferry-and-vineyard day costs once lunch is in. Whether Waitomo and the Shire fit into one sitting. Reviews of every tour you can book out of Auckland.

Out of the city by breakfast

Almost every famous New Zealand day starts on an Auckland kerb at seven.

The Shire, the glowworm caves and the geothermal valleys are all a coach ride from downtown. Three kinds of day out, what each one costs to board, and how long you lose to the road.

Where an Auckland day goes

Six places an Auckland base actually reaches.

A film set in the Waikato, a limestone cave system, a geothermal field, a vineyard island in the gulf, the volcanic city itself and the black-sand coast behind it. Each one with the day out that does it best.

The isthmus

Auckland sits on forty-eight volcanoes between two seas.

You can stand on a crater rim in Mount Eden and look at the Tasman on one side and the Pacific on the other. Half a day covers the cones, the waterfront and the tower; the rest of the city is best walked or eaten.

City of Sails

The Hauraki Gulf is Auckland’s best room, and it has no roof.

Sixty-five islands sit inside a marine park that starts at the bottom of Queen Street. Waiheke has the vineyards, Rangitoto has the crater, and the water between them carries dolphins, whales and more yachts per head than anywhere on earth.

Auckland by price

What a day out of Auckland actually costs.

Every tour on the site grouped by price. Plenty of the best ones cost less than the ferry-and-dinner night you were going to have anyway.

Under $50

Ferry passes, city bus loops, the Sky Tower lift and the short walks around the waterfront.

$50–150

Half-day city runs, Waiheke wine loops, the harbour cruises and the west-coast beach afternoons.

$150 and up

The long coach days south, small-group Hobbiton and Waitomo runs, and the once-a-trip jumps.

Only here

Three things Auckland has that nowhere else does.

Harbours and vineyards turn up all over the Pacific. A living Māori welcome, a city grown over its own volcanic field, and surf beaches of black iron sand forty minutes from the office towers do not.

Tāmaki Makaurau

The welcome that came first

Auckland’s Māori name means the desired one, and the isthmus was fought over for centuries because of it: two harbours, volcanic soil and fishing on both coasts. A pōwhiri still opens with a challenge laid on the ground, and how you pick it up decides how the rest of the visit goes. The carving on a meeting house is a genealogy, not decoration.

Fifty thousand years

A city on a live volcanic field

Around fifty cones sit inside the built-up area and the field is dormant, not dead: Rangitoto rose out of the harbour roughly six hundred years ago and Māori living on Motutapu watched it happen. Mount Eden and One Tree Hill are craters you can walk into, and the stone terraces cut across their flanks are pā fortifications, not landscaping.

The Tasman side

Black sand and a rip that means it

Forty minutes west of the city the road drops out of the Waitākere rainforest onto a beach of iron sand that is genuinely black and, in February, genuinely too hot to walk on. Piha and Karekare take the full Tasman swell, which is why surf lifesaving in this country was more or less invented on them. Swim between the flags or do not swim.

Before the flight lands

Four Auckland bookings that will not wait until you land.

Most of this coast can be sorted over breakfast the day before. These four run on coach manifests, cave entry slots, ferry timetables and the weather, none of which care what time your flight gets in.

  1. 01Hobbiton & Waitomo Caves Guided Day Trip from Auckland incl lunchThe set is only enterable on a guided departure, each one capped and timetabled. Peak-season buses out of Auckland go weeks ahead.
  2. 02Hobbiton & Waitomo Caves Guided Day Trip from Auckland incl lunchCave numbers are limited and the boat runs to fixed entry slots. Turn up hoping and you get the next gap, which may be tomorrow.
  3. 03Ferry & Hop-On Hop-Off Explorer Bus TicketsThe island runs on the ferry, and the last sailing back is the last sailing back. Wine tours are timed around it, not the other way round.
  4. 04Skydive AucklandJumps are weather-called on the morning and rolled to the next clear window. Book it early in the trip so there is a second window.
When the Tasman turns

Auckland can do four seasons before lunch. Plan a roof.

The city sits in the path of everything the Tasman throws east, and a bright morning on the harbour is not a promise about the afternoon. The good news is that the wet-weather list here is genuinely good: a cave is weatherproof by definition, and so is a film workshop, a museum on a hill and a hot pool.
